Anghellic-Tech N9ne-Sinister Tech

When music pleases, it appeals to the masses and therefore
takes away from the whole of the meaning. Hysterics and emotions also divert
the attention away from the music—this movement in emotion then spreads like a
disease. However, it feels that Nietzsche is moved by Wagner’s music and is
uncomfortable with this discomfort. It reminds me of what another student said
earlier in the semester, “Why are we uncomfortable or why do we resist what is
not comfortable?”

“It is easier to make bad music than good music.” When
Professor Naddaff was talking about the contrast of Bizet and Wagner, she
inquired as to what modern genre of music would constitute as popular or in
opposition to pop music. We agreed that hip-hop is a good candidate and I’d
like to elaborate on this. Most hip- hop music appeals to the masses and this
takes away the meaning from the music. If the artist is popular or well known,
so is the music. I would opine that this type of popular music does not awaken
the dead but instead attributes to the fatality of music.  Like Wagnerians, we hang onto the tailcoats
of the reputation of musicians and the focus centers on the composer or the
artist rather than sound itself—thus converting to myth or superficiality.  In this instance, the musicians are
transformed to merely, “stage players”.

In my opinion, Nietzsche would find hip-hop repulsive or
morbid. The lyrics and sound bring attention to the artist and do not evoke any
emotion hence driving the focus to what is said (lyrics) rather than what is heard
(instruments, melody). “Instinct is weakened. What should be shunned attracts
people. What drives still faster into the abyss is put to the lips.” “And once
more: it is easier to be gigantic than to be beautiful…”

I chose Tech Nine, because he consistently raps about
himself. His music seems very simple but it is gigantic, popular and yet, this
makes it anything but beautiful.
