"Let us imagine a rising generation with this bold vision, this heroic desire for the magnificent, let us imagine the valiant step of these dragon-slayers, the proud daring with which they turn their backs on all the effeminate doctrines of optimism that they may 'live resolutely,' wholly, and fully: would it not be necessary for the tragic man of this culture, with his self-discipline of seriousness and terror, to desire a new art, the art of metaphysical comfort—namely, tragedy"
To so many people of my generation rappers are the heroes and dragon slayers Nietzsche mentions. The nature of rap is very strongly Apollonian as well as Dionysian. The poetics of verses often recall very specific images in the listeners mind. Kendrick plays a character offering us a glimpse in to his lived reality with semblance details. Meanwhile the music offers us mood. The way e alters his voice and even has sound effects of ice in a glass to portray alcohol consumption in the song or has the "housekeeping" and knocks further locks the song to our world but the music itself makes the song larger than life. Not to mention the fact that the story K-dot tells is truly tragic. This song really helps me think about what Nietzsche talks about.
