"Hand with Reflecting Sphere" by MC Escher reminds me of Schopenhauer's discussion of two different wills and his discussion of representation. Schopenhauer yearns for a non discursive representation of the Will, and his solution to this is that music is a copy of the Will, the supposedly universal language. This picture shows representation of the artist through a reflecting sphere. Music manages not to represent the will but instead be an exact copy of it. Related to this painting, the hand at the bottom holding the sphere might be music, or "essence", while the other forms of art merely the reflecting sphere, or "shadows" (257). It's interesting to compare visual art to music.
