This picture, called Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, illustrates Schopenhauer's understanding of art as an escape from the suffering of the world. Yet, the viewer need not imagine, but merely view, an aspect of visual art that Schopenhauer criticised. Music, on the other hand, needs full use of our imagination to visualize and escape into the scapes that it creates.
